Your Will is a vital document detailing your wishes and ensures your family have peace of mind when you pass away.

According to the Association of Lifetime Lawyers, around half of adults in the UK do not have a Will, and one in ten have begun writing one but are yet to finish it. Making your Will often falls down the list of priorities as life gets in the way, but the consequences of not having a Will can be financially and emotionally costly for your family.

If you pass away without a Will, the rules of intestacy apply. This means your money and property will be divided in accordance with the law. Someone who you may not have chosen could receive a large share of your estate, whilst other family members may receive nothing. This is especially important today, where many families include stepchildren and unmarried partners. By having a Will, you choose who inherits from you.

Your Will also names which person, or people, should deal with your estate when you pass away. This gives them the legal authority to handle your assets like bank accounts and property. If you do not have a Will, it can be unclear who should take this role. This can cause delays and make it harder for your family to get what they are entitled to. If there is disagreement about who should manage your estate, it can lead to disputes and cause extra stress at an already difficult time.
